At the Monterey Bay Institute of Electrology, you will learn much more than the cosmetic function of electrolysis. You will learn how to help your clients as they build self-esteem and self-assurance.

The Institute provides students with high quality equipment, thorough and comprehensive instruction in theory and practice of permanent hair removal. In addition to the California State of Cosmetology’s Health and Safety rules the Institute has incorporated Infection Control Standards for the Practice of Electrology developed by the American Electrology Association (AEA) with assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

LENGTH OF COURSE

 

A total of 600 hours of study is required in California to qualify for the licensing examination. The course is to be completed within 19 weeks from date of entry. The curriculum includes all methods of electrology–galvanic (including multi-needle), Thermolysis (radio frequency) and Blend (both currents together). The student will learn sanitation and sterilization procedures, Skin Structure, Hair growth cycle, Vascular system, electricity, Safety, and How to establish a business. Students are given written and practical tests to help pass the California state exam.

Each student who successfully graduates will be awarded a diploma and be prepared to meet the board certification requirements for obtaining their licensure as a licensed Electrologist.

 

QUALIFYING

Enrollment requires a high school diploma or G.E.D.  Class size is limited and acceptance is based on a first come-first serve basis beginning the first Tuesday of every month. The Institute welcomes applications at any time from interested individuals and maintains a waiting list of eligible students for future enrollment. Those interested should contact the Institute for an application of Enrollment and Registration.

 

INTRODUCTION TO ELECTROLOGY

  • This includes 1) the history of electrology, 2) current methods of permanent and temporary hair removal.

BASIC SCIENCE

  • A specific study of the following as these areas pertains to electrology;

    1. Anatomy and physiology

    2. Cytology

    3. Histology

    4. Survey of body systems: nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, excretory, reproductive, skeletal, muscular, and integument

    5. Dermatology: normal integument, diseases of the skin

    6. Hair: structure and function, growth cycles, regrowth

    7. Hypertrichosis, hirsutism: causes, evaluation, treatment

    8. Contraindications to electrology

    9. Microbiology: a study of microorganisms, personal hygiene, hand washing, sanitation, antisepsis, disinfection, sterilization, aseptic techniques

    10. Immunology

    11. Basic electricity

    12. Modalities of electrology: electrolysis, single needle method and multiple needle method, thermolysis, manual and automatic method, and the blend method

    13. Electrology techniques and variables, a) techniques, b) variables, probes, intensity, timing, depth of insertion

  • Operation, care, maintenance of equipment and instruments.
